New P&F report recaps, analyzes spectrum licenses granted at auction
Silver Spring, MD, Oct. 23—Pike & Fischer, the telecommunications consultant and publisher, has
released a detailed recap and analysis of the most recent FCC spectrum auction, which was held from Aug. 9 to Sept. 18.
A total of 104 bidders won 1,087 licenses, yielding net revenues of $13.7 billion to the U.S. government, according to Pike & Fischer (P&F).
The P&F report concentrates on the top 14 bidders, each of which spent more than $20 million on licenses. These firms accounted for about 99% of total dollars spent at the auction.
For each of the top bidders, P&F lists every license received, and each license description includes geographic reach, bandwidth, net bid, and price per Mhz-Pop.
In addition, P&F analyzes the market and geographic benefits that the licensees will likely achieve with their new spectrum. For T-Mobile, which spent more than any other company on new licenses, P&F leads its analysis with this comment: “T-Mobile’s top ranking is not surprising, given that it is currently the weak sister among the four leading mobile service providers, due largely to the fact that it lacks the spectrum depth of its larger rivals, which
puts it at a competitive disadvantage, particularly in terms of new broadband services.”
Titled, “Broadband Business Analysis: The AWS Spectrum Auction Winners,” the report’s narrative, charts and graphs fill 96 pages.
