| As cable operators prepare their networks for both rapidly increasing bandwidth demands and competition from telephone company fiber builds, they are upgrading to the DOCSIS 3.0 standard, which adds a number of features to the industry's existing high-speed-data capabilities. This report examines the current state of this DOCSIS 3.0 upgrade and provides a forecast of the pace at which cable operators in the United States will deploy DOCSIS 3.0 services. We conclude that the top cable operators will have DOCSIS 3.0 covering 100% of homes passed by the end of 2013, and that MSOs can significantly shorten the time to achieve a return on their DOCSIS 3.0
investments by aggressively targeting business customers. Five tables and charts are included. Companies covered in the report include Comcast, Cox, Charter, Shaw, Cablevision, RCN, Time Warner Cable, Videotron, ARRIS, Cisco, Motorola, and Netgear.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Cable Will Have Dramatically Faster Broadband Technology Available to All Customers by 2013, P&F Predicts
Silver Spring, MD—Cable companies, which have begun to deploy new technology that will enable them to deliver faster Internet speeds to customers, should have the enhanced broadband service available to nearly all of their customers within the next five years, according to a new forecast by market research provider Pike & Fischer.
Facing demand for more Internet bandwidth from their customers, cable operators like Comcast and Cox Communications are deploying a new version of the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification, or DOCSIS. This new version, DOCSIS 3.0, increases the Internet speed that can be delivered to cable modem users to as much as 100 megabits per second, more than 10 times the typical speeds of today’s cable Internet service.
DOCSIS 3.0 will help cable operators better manage their networks, cut their operational costs, and significantly increase their high-speed Internet revenue, P&F notes. Some of the biggest cable operators will cover 100 percent of their territories with DOCSIS 3.0 capabilities by the end of next year, with others reaching that mark by the end of 2013, according to the P&F analysis.
The Silver Spring, Md.-based research house also predicts that DOCSIS 3.0 will garner a lot of support from government officials distributing funds from the economic stimulus package.
“Considering the massive bandwidth increases that will be enabled by upgrading DOCSIS 2.0 to 3.0, the government is likely to view DOCSIS 3.0 as a most feasible and affordable near-term solution to perceived bandwidth scarcities,” says P&F Chief Analyst Tim McElgunn, who authored the report.
